Do You Need Sewer Line Cleaning? Here’s How to Tell

Posted on: April 6, 2016

The wastewater in your home all goes to a single pipeline that runs from the house under your property and to the municipal sewer line in the center of the street (or to a septic tank if there’s no access to the municipal system). You probably don’t give much thought to this line, and most of the time it won’t give you much reason to worry as it does its job out of sight.

At times, however, you may need to have this line cleaned professionally. Debris, grease, and root infiltration can lead to the line becoming blocked or its volume restricted, and only experienced plumbers with tools such as hydro-jetters can provide the cleaning work necessary to clear it. Here are some signs to watch for that will tell you it’s time to call sewer cleaning professionals:

  • Backed up drains around the house: A single clogged sink usually means a local drainpipe problem. But when multiple drains in your home begin to clog or drain slowly at the same time, you’re dealing with a deeper problem that is likely deeper down in the sewer line. The clogging will start at the ground floor drain—or ones in the basement—which will give you an early warning of what is happening.
  • Sewer odors: A drain that emits foul-smelling odors often means that its p-trap has gone dry and you only need to run water through it to fix it. When multiple drains, ones that are used often, are emitting sewer smells, it may mean that the sewer line is backing up and needs attention right away.
  • Gurgling drains: When a sewer line becomes backed up, sewage will start to rise in the drains. The sewage will release gas bubbles up through the water sent down the drains, resulting in a gurgling noise. When your drains start gurgling after you run water down them, call for plumbers to see if you need sewer line cleaning.
