Advantages of Installing a Zone Control System for your Heating

Posted on: February 29, 2016

Have you used your heating system as efficiently as possible this winter? Or did you find that you were turning it off, despite being cold, to save money on your utility bills? The latter is one of the main restrictions of a central HVAC system. When your heater cycles on, air is blown through the ductwork to every vent in your home, even into empty rooms that don’t need a temperature adjustment.

There is a solution! Zone control systems involve a set of dampers that are installed within the ductwork of your ventilation system. You can determine how many separate zones you want and each damper will be connected to a thermostat located in its zone, or to a master thermostat in one area if you prefer. Essentially, you only need to heat the rooms that you want to heat without affecting the rest of your Durham, NC home. In addition to convenience, we’ve highlighted some other benefits to installing a zone control system below.

Energy Savings

Perhaps the number one advantage of installing a zone control system for your heating is that you won’t waste energy on heating rooms that aren’t occupied. This is especially true in larger homes and/or homes with multiple stories. For example, there is no need to heat up a guest room if it isn’t being used.

Temperatures Suited To Specific Rooms

While unoccupied rooms typically don’t need to be heated at all, there are some rooms that don’t require as much heat. For example, your kitchen creates a good amount of warmth from appliances, so can stand to be a few degrees cooler than places such as the living room or dining room. You may want bedrooms warmer than the rest of the home. This can all be achieved with a zone control system.

Individual Comfort

Chances are in a home with more than one person, there are multiple preferences for how warm or cool the home is. Different members of your household will have different heating preferences and needs. A zone control system lets you give each of them the temperature they desire. Each local thermostat will allow them to make the adjustment themselves.

At Bud Matthews Services, we provide complete services for zone control systems, from new installation and retrofits to repairs. Call us today to learn more!
